DESIGN BRIEF

The client wanted a showpiece home in a new, middle to up market estate on the northern end of the gold coast.

Contemporary construction methods for steel frame houses were to be used, while attempting to style the building with modern ideas to make it stand out from its neighbours without over capitalising.

DESIGN ANALYSIS

The chosen site had wide canal frontage but limited street frontage. Mandatory masonry fencing to the boundaries meant limited sun penetration into side windows, and tight site setbacks also offered limited privacy.

The bulk of the living areas were to face the canal, with five bedrooms, an office, a large media & expansive master suite being important considerations for the client.

DESIGN OUTCOME

Although a south west aspect is not normally the most desirable orientation for a home, the lack of glare from the water means the client can enjoy their views at all times of the day. The open but sheltered indoor and outdoor living areas mean they capture enough of the breeze for cooling purposes.

The master suite also enjoys good views of the canal and a private area to relax away from the rest of the household.

Strong lines with parapets and multiple uses of sun hoods & box framing give articulation to an otherwise fairly simple set of roof planes.
