CATEGORY15 – Special Projects PROJECT ADDRESSPerforming Arts Building, Guardian Angels Catholic Primary School, Edmund Rice Drive, Ashmore. DESIGNERStuart Osman Building Designs DESIGN BRIEFThe clients Brief was to Create a library / Performing arts /multipurpose building that the whole school could utilize. The Head masters original brief was noted and after further discussion the school required a few more specialized rooms which were a science room, manual arts room, home economics room. The other room was to be a green room for the students to develop there movie making skill. Natural light and ventilation was a important requirement by the school. Due to the existing site contours it was suggested to work with the contours and provide auditorium seating, to view shows put on by the students under the covered area in front of the building. Covered walk ways where required to link the new building in with the existing paths and covered areas. Disable access was required to all areas of the new centre, which worked in well with the contours. DESIGN ANALYSISThe site had some inherent issues due to the on site sewer pipes that had to be worker around along with a very poor soil type which incurred extra deep screw piers. The fan shaped building layout had to work around the centre axis of the auditorium, to provided a perfect view of the performance area and the large LCD screens on the front of the building. Seven specialist class rooms with extra storage areas were on of the requirements specified. Ventilation and natural light was achieved with the use of high louver windows which provided light in to the upper Gallery and classroom on the upper floor. DESIGN OUTCOMEThe upper floor class room are all specific use room all with there unique layouts, with the Manual arts room has a rear loading dock to load wood working material. The Art room has special painting drying rakes in the storeroom, the science room has mobile work benches with work sinks at each station. The lower floor in dedicated to the performing arts with a large practice room with two props storage areas, the Green room is very high tech with a full curved floor to ceiling screen for seamless horizon movie making with high spec acoustic wall and ceiling linings. The library has lap top computer work desks with a fun casual seating reading area in the rear. All the brief requirements from the school were filled plus more. The building façade was to have low profile roofs catching all the roof water is routed into large water tanks, all the windows have screens or hoods to protect from the summer sun. the bold colour to to front façade are the schools colours and give it a modern feature and bright feel to the junior schools environment. |
